My Journey
Profile Shown, Profile Being Shown
Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006 @ 3:59 p.m.

Our case worker called last week to touch base with us and give us a quick update. She said that our profile was shown in November. The birthmom chose a family with no children. She said that they have sent profiles as requested by other offices, but none of those situations matched our criteria. The potential birthmoms they are working with now won't be ready to choose families until after the holidays.

It was nice to know that our profile was shown. The situation must have been exactly what we are looking for, or else we would have been notified before the profile was shown. It would have been quite a shock to get a call out of the blue if we had been chosen for that baby. I was happy to know that we can go through the holidays without having to worry about getting a new baby.

We got a phone call today from our case worker's associate. They got a request for profiles from an office in Indiana for a baby born December 4 (nine days ago!). The birthmom wants to choose a family from Michigan since she grew up here. There were a couple questions for us since the birthmom has two medical problems that could be (about a 10% chance for each) passed on to the baby. The baby is currently in good health, so we decided that we would have our profile shown. If the baby ends up getting these illnesses later in life, we will deal with it. One of the medical problems wasn't as much of a concern because it's already in our family and any biological child of ours would be at risk of getting it too.

The baby is currently in interim care, and they want to get him/her placed by Christmas or at least have a family chosen. Like my first child, I don't want to share the gender until I know he/she is coming home with me. I never would have found out the gender during an ultrasound out if I became pregnant. With adoption we usually are told the gender of the baby ahead of time, so I make up for that by not telling people the gender of the child we might adopt. Something has to be a surprise!

So now we are faced with the possibility of traveling 3 hours (according to a mapping website) to Indiana for who knows how many days to pick up our baby during the middle of the holiday season. I think it is highly unlikely that we will be chosen, as I am sure there are many families in Michigan open to adopting this baby. However, it is nice to be considered, and it is exciting to think about it. The only bad part about the whole thing is that we might have to cancel our travel plans. We have tickets to fly to Seattle the last week of January to visit my mom and sister. I don't know what kind of restrictions we will be under, but it would be nice if we could still travel out of state. I guess we'll figure that out if we need to. We can pay whatever fees we need to pay and delay the trip.

I'll probably be daydreaming about that little baby the next week. I don't know anything about what the birthparents look like or even their ages, just that they are Caucasian. So it's hard to picture what the baby could look like. Maybe it's better that I don't know.

So that's where I am right now. I'll update if I hear anything more.
